Including Indigenous Canadians in a "Just Transition"

The Natural Resources Committee discussed the Trudeau government's intent to Create a Fair and Equitable Canadian Energy Transformation at our meeting on May 30.

First Nations representatives expressed concern about a lack of consultation; and that the government is trying to put another layer of bureaucracy on projects that Indigenous communities support.

Canada's First Nations want the authority to develop projects on their own lands.

National Coalition of Chiefs spokesman Dale Swampy pointed to Alaska as a model of Indigenous-led resource development.
