Half a Million Jobs and $20 Billion in Taxes: Oil & Gas Industry

The Natural Resources committee continues its study on Creating a Fair and Equitable Canadian Energy Transformation.

On May 9, the witness stated that 522,000 Canadians are directly and indirectly employed by the oil and gas sector, plus thousands of others such as regulatory and public service employees who deal with the industry.

She also reported that the industry provides about $20 Billion per year to all levels of government, and that 45% of the increased revenues in Budget 2022 came from rising commodity returns. She emphasized that oil and gas is not a subsidized industry, but one that contributes significantly to Canada's bottom line.

The witness also made the interesting observation that on the Canada LNG project, and the associated Coastal Gas Link project, about 6% of the workers are Indigenous Canadians.
